91" SkyWing ARS 300 Assembly Thread

Been working on my wings now. One thing I’m learning about skywing carbon planes is the carbon is very thin. Think of it as a carbon vernier over thin ply. If bonded correctly it is strong and light... however it’s not very good under compression. Look the plane over by pressing on the surface. I have found quite a few voids that needed to be addressed. The main ones were on the engine box and my wing root. I used thin CA to rebond most of it with success.

This is just a bad fit all together. QC missed this I think

Got some goodies from Tim at NWRC. Blue fuel dot so I can finish my fuel line routing.

Then slapped a coat of polyurethane on the firewall to preserve it.

Finished setting up my wing and tail linkages at neutral. Need to bust the protractor out now.
Still need to set up my throttle servo, place my antenna orientation, and do some cowl work along with trying to make a decent choke linkage.

Been scratching my head which throttle servo to use PM DS305 or Savox 1267. I’ve heard mixed feelings on every brand and shoot... I’m just going to pick one and fly it. Found a servo box in my collection, modified and painted it, added some anti-vibration tape in it, and epoxied it in place.

I decided to make a glass flange in the cowl to help guide any exhaust residue. I globbered it up pretty bad, the side that I didn’t really even need to do turned out the best ugg. It’s going to work just fine. Found a pvc tube, wrapped it in wax paper, and then taped it in place. I should have wrapped the tube in glass prior but I didn’t which made it look like crud.

Need to sand and grind now

Well after grinding I soon realized that my glass skills are lacking... and the opening was too narrow. So in my defeat, I did it all over again and wrapped my pvc tube in some material to make it thicker. End result was much better.
I’ve probably somehow made everything worse by doing this but hey... it’s not modeling if you can’t be creative and try something new right?

Throttle linkage complete. Tried using the geometry guide as best I could. I cannot bring myself to let the servo arm go to zero degrees. As I move the throttle I can tell the carb arm moves quicker as it gets to the top. So I know there is some geometry creating a mechanical throttle curve.

Nice to see it pretty much hit the end points with little adjustment.

Close enough for me!

The plastic ball link seems a little close to the muffler.... hope it’ll be ok?!

Need to figure out my choke linkage now

Made a little opening in the cowl for the needle access. Used a little sippy straw and taped it to the needles, trimmed to length until it almost touched the cowl. Could see through the cowl to mark it and make an oblong hole.

Some wire routing. Used the foam wire standoffs for the ignition wires. Turned out pretty nice.

I don’t know if I showed this or not. There is a foam insert with holes for the fuel tubing and wires to pass through. Kinda neat! I used the rubber grommet where the ignition module is on the engine box and slid it in the choke servo hole for my fuel tubing and wires to sneak out. Fits!
Added a piece of craft foam to cover the throttle servo hole.
