I think the Laser is the hot 60-class EXP everywhere right now. I also think there has been a rejuvenation of the 78 Extra now that guys are powering it to 3500W on electric, and the new 40cc twin seems to be a winner, so far. All that plane needed was a touch more power and it really blossomed as a 3D airframe, IMO.

I'd personally like to see a 70 to 74 inch Laser since transporting two 78's in the back of the SUV is not going to happen. I actually bought a plane from another manufacturer for the first time in over two years just to get a 74 inch that will fit with my son's 78. Turned out to be a winner, but I'd still prefer the two servos, split elevators, and bolt on stabs that EF goes with from 70 inches and up. And let's face it, an 11 pound airplane is so much easier and less expensive to power to a 2-to-1 power to weight in both gas and electric than a 13+ plane.

I have felt the same way about the 78 till the middle of this season. We finally found some power combos that got enough punch to make it shine. I did not want to do a 10s electric setup.

For the 78 MXS I might try a 12s 3300-4000 setup and see if I can get that to work. I like having 1 big electric in the fleet. The two latch canopy makes this more desirable as I HATED having to undo the canopy bolts on my 89 slick when it was electric. Also the expense of the Q80 and monster HV ESC was a issue. I am hoping a A60-8S with a HV Gecko will do the trick on a 78 MXS and Chris keeps the gas canopy arrangement. I understand the electric version is coming before a gasser version will be out.

IMO, for the 78 MXS, we'll need a 21-23 ounce motor with a 188Kv that can manage a 22x10 PJN, Mejzlik E, or Falcon E on 12S and 85A, or a 196 Kv with a 21x10 to 80A. These setups will produce between 25 and 28 pounds of thrust, or a 2-to-1 thrust to weight ratio. 2x 6S 4400's should do 6.5 minutes.

I am loving the crap out of my 60" Laser and can't wait to see a 70-78" version of it.

The only problem I see is that the difference between a 2-pack of 5000mAh 6S 40C batteries and a 4400mAh 6S 2-pack can be as much as 9.4 ounces. With that said, I've already flown a slightly heavier gas version of the 78 Extra converted to electric with 2x 40C 5000 Sky Lipos with an A60-16M, the A60-MM cage mount, and a Ice2 HV120, right at 14 pounds, and it handled the extra weight really well.

The electric version setup with the 28 pole A60-7S and 2x 5S 40C 5000 batts comes in at 13.2 pounds. The difference in weight between the 2x 5S 40C 5000 Skys and the 2x 6S 40C 5000 Skys is only 6.72 ounces. That could mean an AUW of 13 pounds, 10 ounces on 6S 5000's. I'd say it's a strong possibility if I can find a 22 ounce 196Kv motor that I can trust... like Hacker or Motrolfly, but a 21x10 on the DM330-195, or whatever the next wind down from the 203 is, may not be doable. The Hacker A60-8S V2 at 188Kv may be the realistic choice, as Enterprise mentioned.

From my calculations, a 21x10E Falcon on a 188Kv on 12S should do no fewer than 6680 RPMs, and if it does, we should see 24.2 to 25.0 pounds of thrust at no more than 75A. The way I fly the 78, that could be 8 minutes on 2x 6S 5000, and it could still come in at 13.75 pounds. I think I would go for 6.5 minutes and drop the weight by going to 6S 4000's. You may also want to see if two 6S 5000's can fit on the battery tray between the beams. I'll get a measurement for you later.
