Hello Fellow Pilots!

My name is Jason and I am new to the world of 3D Flying. I started off flying gliders when I was a teenager took a long break and got into nitro planes two years ago. Now I am sick of the mess and going to jump to gas or maybe electric. My current hangar includes Aeroworks 60/90 Extra 300, Top Flite P51D and Super Skybolt Biplane. Recently bought Aerofly RC simulator to fine tune my 3D skills and thinking that a 65" profile 3D with a 20cc may be a goof stepping stone. Or I could just put a 20cc on my AW Extra 300.

By the end of this year my goal is to be good enough to jump to a 30cc Extreme Flight 78" Extra. with a 40cc Valley View Engine.

If anyone fly's a fun 20cc profile plane let me know which one so I can check it out. Up for any recommendations either way.

That's it in a nutshell.

Awesome! If you go with a 20cc plane i would recommend Electric! The 20cc size motors and on up to even some 30cc are a pain to break in and start. Bigger than that they are a joy! Also, the 40cc twin by VVRC is really been a great motor for many here and I don't think you can go wrong with that setup... EF is an awesome manufacturer!

+1- I have the 78 extra with a piped DLE 35 RA and it has been awesome. 3-5 flips (including choked flips) and I'm gone! The smaller gas engines are coming along but still need work. For any China engine I strongly recommend doing the reed valve mid and adding a Bowman ring. It makes the starting and idling much better.
You may want to consider a TH foamie for a practice plane. The new MXS 32" looks like a real winner but any of the "crack" series are great tools for 3D learning and confidence.

Big welcome to ALL the new faces. I love the fact that we are getting "transition pilots" from other disciplines. You'll find this forum goes way beyond 3D. Enjoy.

I currently own a Aero Works 60/90 extra that I am about to put a VVRC 21cc gas engine in to get my feet wet with 3D. I want the best performing 3D plane that will be a plane I can grown with but that I can handle. I am a solid pilot intermediate to advanced but not familiar with 3D. I really want a Extreme Flight 78" 300 with a 40cc VVRC engine but I really want to have fun flying 3D and not be worried about crashing a $1200 plane. But I really am concerned that I will drop $500 on a profile set up and then get bored and wish I had the 78". So here are my options please share your thoughts.

- Aerobeez 65" 330 or Sbach profile with a 20cc (if a profile is the way to go which ones do you all like)?
- Extreme Fight 78" Extra 40cc
- 3DHS 72" Extra 330SC or similar
- Aerobeez
- Redwing

What do you think, other options?

Lastly What servos do I need to handle 3D maneuvers. Great value but solid performance.

Thank you for your help.

Welcome to the forum, you have landed in the right spot. The advise I received here was invaluable. I will second what dth7 said, get a foamie, that combined with a sim and lots of practice will make you a 3D pilot. I say you should get the Twisted Hobbies Crack Lazer, it flys more like a balsa plane that any foamie I have flown. It is what I consider to be a real life simulator. I fly that thing daily and my flying improves daily because of it.

Best of luck here, I am sure you are in for a lot of fun. AKf

Welcome to all the new members! You are gonna love it here :D
TFilms it sounds like you are most comfortable with fuel planes.

I second the other pilot reccomendations to get an electric foamie to learn 3d basics on. Half the game is practice and the other half is confidence. You can really get flight time quickly on a foamie and knowing a crash means little to no damage helps with confidence. If you decide to go that route and need help with electric setups there is lots of help available here.

At the end of the day it is your money but I think anyone trying to learn 3d will most likely save money starting on a foamie... the risk is just way smaller.

I personally don't like profiles. Just a personal opinion, as they fly wonderfully, just not my thing.

You will quickly discover that outside of profiles, 20cc makes little sense as there are so few airframes for those motors. Lord knows I tried last season with my Mintor 22 and OS GT22 to find airplanes for them to work in. The 3DHS Velox is a bit underpowered for the new breed of XA flying and the same cost as the 30cc planes. I tried a H9 Katana, and it was silly power, but lacked in 3D ability. That AW Extra is a 60" plane. It will be stupid powered on that motor, and also be on the heavy side. It has less wing than my Katana did. Tell us how it works out, you will probably have to use 3 blade props to tame it down from prop effects.

30cc is a probably where you want to be at at this price point. Lots of excellent motor choices with the DLE-30 with a bowman ring, OS GT33 (my favorite) as it has a great throttle response, and is great on the noise front, DLE-35 that dth7 mentioned, and the soon to be released unobtainium DA-35. The VVRC-40 is a beast of a motor and I kind of considered it a larger class than the others.

If you are a EF fan, look at the 70" EXP. I had one electric, and I sold it to a local whom put a DLE-30 on a quiet canister. It does not have the extreme pitch authority I love, but it flies wonderfully and is a bit cheaper than the 78 as shipping is $40 versus over $100 and comes with CF landing gear. It has removable stabs and need mini servo in the tail, which might add to the expense.

3DHS IMHO makes the best pure 30cc planes on the market for flying qualities, but they are built light. The 72 needs some mods to the wings, the 71 slick needs some mods to the fuse sidewalls, and the 74 is the all arounder.

I am personally trying a 50cc plane from Aerobeez and Redwing, but I can't directly comment on which one is better as they are not finished yet. The Redwing MXS has a wonderful reputation.

Servo wise, I just started trying the budget HK-15298s in a Pilot-RC sbach. The plane is not working out on CG (I did it electric) so I am not there on commenting on the servos, but they were under $20, and put out the required torque on my tester. I use Hitec 5565MHs in 3 of my 30cc 3D planes, but they are $60 range servos. I think you will see that digital servos that hold up to 3D are in the $50 or so price point. You are looking for around 200 oz-in and speed under .15 or so. If you are OK with a little less speed the Hitec 5685MHs are very nice. They put out more torque than spec'd in my testing and I liked the feel of them on my old 74 Edge. The slowness was a sort of expo to me, and they are at the $40 price point. Savox make good servos, but I have not tried any in this size range.

Once you go gas, a lot of the items are similar in price regardless of size, like the switches, fuel tanks, IBECs, throttle servos, fuel dots, fuel lines, fuel filters, etc.

Kim3D I am so glad another sin city brother has made it to this forum. He is a wealth of knowledge, a bad a$$ pilot, and a good guy. And to the rest of you, welcome to the boards.

Hello folks,

I own www.onlyfinehelis.com and have been flying helicopters for a while and just moved into 3d planes in the last couple of years. We have already expanded our offerings at our brick and mortar shop, and will be adding some 3d planes to the website when I can get to it.

My son is 8 years old and loves his 3D planes. He had flown collective pitch helis for a while and had never flown a plane except on the simulator until last year. So I took him out with his Eflite Yak 54/180 and on his first battery he was hovering and knife edging ( there's your advertisement for sim training! :) ). Since then he has come along quite quickly and I'm looking forward to seeing how he progresses. I'm planning on having him into a 30cc plane this summer and if he does well, we'll work him into a 50cc. Right now we're just having fun with it.

There's a lot of great info on the forum and we look forward to learning from you folks.

YES I am new here!
My name is Manfred and I like to say Hello to all of you!
After a pause of two years I am back to the scene. Currently I warm up my fingers with a small nitro aerobatic plane. But I wanna step in to the 30cc class.
May be you guys have some suggestions with what I shall go. Can somebody explain the difference in behavior between a Sbach , Extra and Yak55M please?
