I have had success using marine axle grease. It stays put and doesn't degrade as quickly as most.

This is what I used on my squeeky wheels. I have it on hand since I also use it on my mountain bikes and quads chain's (wheeled things that you try and kill yourself on, not those weird flying things)

I greased my axles last year and lost a wheel in flight.. I guess the grease traveled and got under the collar. No I drill through the axle and wrap wire around it..
