Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% PA-28 Cherokee Build

To hold the mold in place I used 1"x 10" sheeting, another $15 at Lowes. It really helps having the mold on firm ground. I started waxing without the supports and decided it wasn't goin to work. Before taking the photo I sopped up the excess resin in the bottom of the mold with paper towels...

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% PA-28 Cherokee Build

Put 15 coats of Partall #2 wax and 3 coats of Partall #10 PVA on the mold. then got the first 4 ounce glass cloth on. In the past I used West Systems products, trying a different product from US Composites based on reading here on the web. The US Composites products are cheaper also, $55 for 3...

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% PA-28 Cherokee Build

The mold is complete. There are a few bubbles that occurred, not sure why but suspect working in the sun had something to do with it. I can patch them up with putty. The balsa work plug was destroyed in the removal. Going to make two fiberglass parts then make the cement plugs. Rather...

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% PA-28 Cherokee Build

Put two coats of resin mixed with carbon powder, one layer of 6 ounce cloth, two layers of chopped fibers on the ends. Will add the chopped fibers the remaining surfaces tomorrow. Might need another quart of resin.

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% PA-28 Cherokee Build

Spent a lot of time recently working on the "new to me" mill, time to get back on the Cherokee. Mounted the canopy plug to a dry eraser board purchased at Lowes, then put on 14 coats of wax, sprayed the last coat of release film this morning. Hope to lay up the mold tomorrow. It will get to...

    Mini lathe (and mill) discussion.

A drill press is still handy, drilling on a mill can be a pain. If I'm just drilling holes, I would normally prefer the drill press.

Now that is a mill! Hope you have a big truck! You're going to have a real nice shop. Have any idea of the weight?

    Mini lathe (and mill) discussion.

I tried a table on my drill press many years ago. I was milling steel and the results were less than ideal. I would image that aluminum and plastic would work however. The drill press lacks the mass and rigidity needed.

Don't get too hung upon threading, for the type of work we do you can just use a die. I single pointed one thread on my lathe in the past 16+ years!

I keep my keys and live centers mounted on the lathe back splash, as for speed I use the 400 rpm for most applications. Leave the key ther once and start the lathe, you will not forget again! I see your lathe is Vevor brand, just found them recently.

Quick up date on the mill. Adding 3 axis DRO and power feed on the x axis. Purchased the DRO from Vevor, $180 includes the display and scales along with the R8 collet holder . I have the X and Y axis scales installed and waiting for aluminum to finish off the Z axis. The scales supplied are...

Scale Nelitz 1/3 scale Cub build

A 2mm screw will be about the same size as a #2 servo screw. That is a weak spot on planes like the Cub and Champ. My Champ cracked in that area on a harder than normal landing, ended up milling a slot and epoxied in a 1/8" piece of music wire, did both sides, thankfully it is hidden under the...
