IIRC about 10mm?

Yes anywhere from 8 to 10mm should do fine.

I used 1/2" (13mm) spacers on the laser which made it easier to remove cowl... With all the other EXPs I used 1/4" (6.35mm) spacers.

Having some Laser envy watching @brianb fly his Laser with the Cortex in it... Hands off hovering when he wants it.

+1. Now the FOG talk of Hover and KE "switches" will start again.

It was more a comment about the capes of the gyro rather than my idea of a fun flight.
However, I can see how the gyros power of stabilizing the plane can allow you the help you need to push your skills to the next level, by allowing you to focus on one axis to learn at a time instead of 3.
