    I'm going/went flying 2021 thread

I got to go twice this week. Valiant and Giant Super Sportster both made it home in one piece. Like Nick said, the sun helped a lot. But, I live where I can see White Sands Missle Range. Temp was in low 60’s.

    Yippee! What the postman brought

I can’t give you a real good flight report. Because of my lay-off from flying, I’m still behind the plane a little, and focusing on not getting into trouble. But I have managed most of the maneuvers in the basic pattern sequence. As with any high wing tail dragger, you need to be pretty good...

    Yippee! What the postman brought

The Valley View 40 twin is a great choice for this plane. It hadn’t been started in over 6 years and even then didn’t have an hour of run time. Still not dialed in just right, but on the last flight, it hand started on the first flip.

    Yippee! What the postman brought

Three trips to the flying field and 10 total flights. Still don’t have the elevator/flap mix dialed in. I set the lowest flap at 85% of total throw and with 25% down elevator mix, it still balloons too much to be useful. Mid flaps and 15% works great. Realize that this is the first time I...

    Yippee! What the postman brought

I have 2 bags of those clips. Use them just like Nick, everywhere I can’t use heat shrink. We call them TDTs. Short for, hand me one of “those damn things”. They do tend to hang up pulling them through a wing, but well worth the effort.

    Yippee! What the postman brought

Finished the Valiant! Going flying Monday for the first time in 3 years. All the excitement of my first solo, 35 years ago. Pics and a brief review coming later today.

    Yippee! What the postman brought

Been out of the hobby for 3-4 years. Sold several of my favorite planes including 110in Cessna 310, 40cc powered Big Foot, and other really cool planes. Here’s what I discovered - my shop was so crowded i had to rearrange stuff just to put a plane on the bench. Storage was limited and...

    Scale Plans built P-51

As I recall, the Nosen original is a 1piece wing. When Bud first drew them, there was no such thing as servo extensions or gas engines. The ailerons were connected to standard analog servos using long rods and bell cranks. There was no provision for disconnecting these rods.

    Scale Plans built P-51

I finished all the hinging. Some adjustments may be necessary to accomplish the full range of throw, but any changes at this point will be minor. The only task left is the control horns and linkages. The new paint arrived Thursday. I hope there’s enough. Got to wait until it warms up a...

    Scale Plans built P-51

I think maybe Jerry’s plans are the way to go. George’s plans were really good, but, if they’re not going to be available, we might as well move on. Besides, George’s plans were 3 times the price.

Let me try to talk to George one more time. He didn’t reply the las time I PMd him.

I can tell you that a 103” Mustang is a shop full!!! At least in a small basement shop like mine. I don’t know if it takes up more room with parts laying about, or put together on top of the table. George’s plans are all hand drawn. He doesn’t have them in a digital format.

    Scale Plans built P-51

I know I said hinging was my least favorite thing to do when building from plans. It’s not. Sanding is. I sprayed the plane with the Montana Gold spray paint. As it turns out, it’s not as horrible as I said. I think buffing it out and spraying it with clear coat, it might’ve been ok. But...

I forgot to put the exhaust stacks on for the first picture. They were difficult to do, but sure turned out better than my usual attempts.

It’s a shop full. Painting, then hooking up the control surfaces. Getting close.

I've been waiting to hear. I should've taken mine down and we could compare notes. I'll do that next week.

    Scale Plans built P-51

I’ll have pictures later today of the Mustang fully assembled, but last night, I got the engine and ignition module mounted and adjusted. I remember back in my early modeling days (1980’s) we’d shim the little ‘40’ size engine mount with a couple degrees right and maybe 1 degree or so down...
