Getting started in Giant Scale RC---Tools and Supplies

I agree, dremels are pretty handy to have Pbilt and I was planning to hit on what can be done with wiring via a soldering iron and crimping tool once some of the other stuff has been covered. Thanks! Bart

so damn nice I can't stand it!

    Over-Thick Control Surfaces

it isn't just the aileron, it's the profile of the wing trailing edge also that contributes to the effect. the aileron LE has to be able to pinch up or down against the overhang of the trailing edge contour to restrict airflow through the gap at higher displacements. I designed my own SS...

    Over-Thick Control Surfaces

you're right, i misread the wikipedia entry but it would be weird for it to have the SS ailerons as it came from the factory as Curtis hadn't introduced them yet and Aerotek wasn't in a position at the time to design them themselves. What was the N number? I'd be curious to research it and see...

    Over-Thick Control Surfaces

if you had symmetrical wings, four ailerons, and the aileron profile looked like that then you either had an S1-11B or an S1-SS. It's possible it was an S1-T that had S1-SS wings in place of the original S1-T wings.

    Over-Thick Control Surfaces

the S1-T was a -C made by Aerotek so it had flat bottom ailerons to go with the flat airfoils that the -C's have. Wikipedia has a great entry on the line of Pitts biplanes. I've got a thing for Pitts biplanes, I'd like to have an S1 of some variety one of these days but they ain't...

    Over-Thick Control Surfaces

the squared off trailing edges helps the airflow to make a clean break with airflow on the top separating off the TE as close as possible to how the bottom airflow is breaking, again to help the aileron feel stable and well centered as the pilot is centering the stick. it can reduce vibrations...

    Over-Thick Control Surfaces

what you guys are talking about is what Curtis Pitts did with the S1-11B Super Stinker which is why you'll hear guys referring to the thick ailerons as SS ailerons. The Pitts S1-SS used the SS literally as it is an S1-S with SS ailerons. Curtis found his inspiration by looking at what...

Getting started in Giant Scale RC---Tools and Supplies

ok, so to the list of tools we add a dirty dog, dirty water, a drill press, and a bench top scroll saw. :smile-new: that stuff's all nice to have so i can't argue with what you're saying but for a new builder or someone getting into assembly of their first ARF, it might not be possible...
