Sport Restoring A Different Laser

Good evening Fellas,

I have decided to let my old Laser restoration thread die since I hadn't posted anything in it for the last 18 months and also, I will not be doing anything more with that plane (other than trying to sell it). I thought about it quite a bit, but I ultimately decided to start a new thread to keep me from getting confused. . . . .. The other reason for the new thread is to share with you gentlemen my latest acquisition. This past Saturday, I drove north for about 5-1/2 hours and met someone we all know and admire, our good friend @Bartman. He posted his Laser for sale on another forum and I was intrigued by the pictures he posted. What I didn't expect to see when I saw the plane in person, was without a doubt the best looking Laser I have ever seen and the build quality and covering job was OUTSTANDING! ! ! ! The gentleman who built the plane definitely knew what he was doing. Here are a few pictures of what I came home with.

To say I am overjoyed with this plane is an understatement. The plane came with the matching wheel pants, partial rolls of both the matching burgundy and cream Monocote and a 3 ring binder with a very detailed breakdown of the building of the kit with building instructions, receipts foe everything that was used to build and outfit the plane, pictures of the build process and even notes that were written out to show changes that were made to the construction of the plane. The plane was built in 2003 and it was originally outfitted with a G-62. The plane currently has a DLE-61 that I believe Bart put in it after he bought it. When Bart put the DLE in it, he also removed the two rudder servos from the tail and put a single JR 8711 forward in the fuse with pull/pull cables to the rudder. After making these two changes, Bart said he was able to remove a very large chunk of lead from engine compartment and still maintain a neutral balance on the model. As all of you can tell from the above pictures, this is going to be a very short "Restoration" thread. Bart told me I could charge up the battery and fly it right away and he was absolutely correct. As a matter of fact, I am only changing two things on the plane, both of which are just my preference. The DLE will be removed and a 3W55 will be installed. The other thing is the elevator & aileron servos will be removed and some MKS servos I got from @pawnshopmike will be installed. Both of these things will be done in short order and I'm considering flying the Laser before I fly my Yak.

Stay tuned Fellas, more updates will be forthcoming. . . . :big_yes:.

Picture worthy for sure! What a beaut! Sounds like the builder went was meticulous, show quality and a flier.
Why the change from the DLE61 to the 3W55? Which MKS servos?

You made a good bye plane looks brand new. Why change anything, fly it first and then decide if you still want to change it.

Glad you like it Dave. The tachometer in the instrument panel is functional as is the ignition light.

It rips with the DLE 61 but it's Dave's plane so he's gonna do what he's gonna do. :way_to_go:

Thanks @AKNick ,
You are so right, my friend. the pictures of the plane in my post do not do it any justice. I'm going to take it out to the field on Sunday when the sun is supposed to be out and take some better pictures. The reason for the engine switch is that I cannot fly a plane with an engine that I have no confidence in. I've had a NIB 3w-55CS sitting in the box in my model room for years. I bought it to put in my Jug, but that was before Saito came out with the 60 radial. As far as servos are concerned, since this plane will never do any 3D, I'm going to put an HV1250 on each elevator half and an HV1220 on each aileron. I'm going to leave the rudder servo that Bart put in the plane, its a JR 8711. My batteries will be Li-Ion so I will have more torque than I'll ever need.

Absolutely beautiful. :big_yes:
Thanks Bro and thanks again for hooking me up with the servos.

You're right @Snoopy,
Bart made me an offer that nobody in their right mind would turn down. Everyone I told about the plane has asked me the same question about the engine switch. I gave my reasons in my response to Nick above. As a matter of fact, I already have a buyer for the DLE so it works out better for everyone.

Glad you like it Dave. The tachometer in the instrument panel is functional as is the ignition light.

Hey @Bartman,
I saw the tach and engine light in the cockpit when I took the pictures of the plane on Sunday. I've never seen one of those electronic tacks so I'm curious to see how it works. BTW, do you want me to put the receiver in the mail and send it back to you? I'll be more than happy to do it. I wish you would have reminded me about the Excalibur. I got so excited about getting the Laser, I forgot all about it.

HEY!..GET OUTTA MY TREE!
Nice! I saw Bart last night and he didn't mention this purdy Laser! One suggestion would be to put a larger pilot head in there....kinda looks like a little kid flying

I was a little bummed about the Excalibur, a good challenge is nice once in a while. Maybe next time we're not far from each other you can hand it off to me.

Sure, it would be appreciated if you'd put the receiver in the mail for me. I'll PM the address.

I didn't built it Earle, that pilot figure is a bit on the small side.

Hey @Bartman I got your PM, but I have been very busy with work. I did get the receiver out of the plane last Sunday. I will get it boxed up and in the mail to you early next week.
