Well with the weather the way it is I got the urge to do some building. Got the Viper ST out and glued in all the horns for the plane. Can’t believe it, it took me most of the day but it is done and I enjoyed it. Hopefully I can get it done for the 2018 flying season. The only thing is that I am starting to question is my decision on putting in a DA100l in the plane. The predicted weight to be 27 to 28 lbs. it may be a little heavy for a 100, at present I am flying a 21 1/2 lbs extra with a DA 85 it’s ok but not outrageous. So I am pondering if I should put a DA120 in it . Does anyone have a suggestion. @ericrs can you tell what your plane weight is and how well does it pull out of a prop hang with a DA100. Or if you had to do it over would you go with a DA120. Thanks.

21.5 pounds with a DA85 should be rediculous. I've flown one with a DA85 with a RE3 tuned pipe that weighed 26 pounds and it had very good power. 4.5 pounds less would have made it ballistic.

My IMAC ride w 108” ws weighs 30 pounds. Has the old DA 100 on it. It pulls decent but I do have to get a bit of a running start on power hungry manuevers. If you are going to do 3D with the viper, I would strongly suggest the 120, IMHO.

Thanks for all the help and yes I am into 3D . Got into 3D at the end of last season and all of this season I am just addicted right now especially since I am starting to get the hang of it. Like some have said teaching an old new tricks could be fun and it really is. So now I am changing my hole fleet to 3D and I just want power I think it is drug for me. Yes I have to agree that I should put a 120 into the ViperST. Looking at a DA120 c/w mufflers not cheap but power has always been costly, thanks for the help.

I have a ready to fly weight of 27 lb. 4 oz. I have yet to fly the plane:( Been crazy busy with all the fall harvest activity for the last two months, so no flying time. @Terryscustom said the the fuselage isn't designed to take the power of a DA 120, and the performance with a DA 100L is really great. Go watch one of his videos of the plane with a DA 100L in it and see what you think.

@Snoopy1 I have had both engines. The original DA100 on stock muffs in a GP CAP @ 29 pounds and the original DA120 on canisters in an EF 104 @28.5 pounds. Yes the 120 had "insane" power but the 100 had really good power too. Swinging a 27x10 wood prop. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with a DA100L in a viper weighing 27 pounds. It flew (DA100) my CAP out of hovers with great authority and control straight up unlimited. I found that, for myself, the power the 120 had was more a hinderence to my flying style and way more a bitch to tune.

I love the insane power of the DA 120, however you are so right about the DA 100. The DA 120 is like having a rocket booster on the plane. The DA 100 is simply smooth, predictable, and makes a balanced setup with planes in that range. I can imagine the DA 100L would be just right for something in the 25-27 lb range.

Just been going over my HUGE 26cc tiny plane :p. Replaced the servos with HV blue birds and made a new Pull Pull arm with the metal servo wheels I got. The black striping in the scheme had the mylar separate so I got some lacquer thinner to get the black off the white covering.
Also installed a bright LED on the RcExcel ignition cut off switch.

Hi @ericrs good to hear from you again. You working to much you have to get out once in a while to smell the roses. Thanks for the answer, I must say after watching that video again it looks like 100 will do just fine. It just that I am just starting out in 3D and from the smaller planes I have found that extra horsepower makes it easier to do 3D, hou have that extra punch to pull out or to pull the plane back up straight and continue hanging on the prop. I need all the help I can get .

Thanks for that, good to see that the 100 has more than enough to do the job. One thing I did not know is that the DA120 is some what more difficult to tune nice to know.
Thanks to all of you for your input it is very helpful. Especially when getting into 3D and making sure that you have the right stuff to do it. So that I can only blame the pilot and the equipment. I remember when starting out I just struggling and I believe it was @Jetpainter that said you need a rudder Servo this size to do that. Changed it and it was like day and night the improvement in the plane and my skills.
