Motor mounting question

Kinda feel goofy about asking this but... I am in the process of building a foam plane that is just a profile style foamie that resembles a YAK, nothing fancy. I am building this to assist me with learning 3D flying. I understand that a common starting mounting angle of 3 degrees right offset is used on model planes... is this necessary for my application as well? I apologize if this should have been posted in the Scratchbuilt! section.

Thanks,
Rich B.

Okay GYRO thanks, hoping cwojcik views this thread.
3dNater, this is a scratch built 46" wingspan nothing fancy. Just something to practice and learn with.

On most foamies running 0-0 (0 degrees down thrust, 0 degrees right thrust) is fine. If you feel like you need it, add a mix in your radio for about 5% right rudder to full throttle and this will achieve pretty much the same thing.

Are you building from plans or designing yourself? If you are trying to learn to fly 3D, a proven design from a respectable manufacturer, or plans for the Leadfeather yak, will probably make things a lot easier than trying to both learn airplane design and flying at the same time.

Thank you for the information. I am building from some very basic plans that I scaled up. Please keep in mind these plans are not from a manufacturer, but from a scratch builder. I viewed several videos of their version fly, etc. In my opinion the plane appeared to be pretty decent to learn with. Very low cost to me to build and try it out... if all else fails I will purchase one from a respectable manufacturer. I have enjoyed building it thus far, and I am waiting on the rest of the electronics to be delivered to complete the build. If anyone would like to see it when it's complete I could post some pictures or maybe a short video. It is just a simple profile foamie, but I like it ;). I hope it performs to my expectations.

Good luck Rich B. I think scratch building is cool although I haven't done too much of it myself. I'm glad you got your thrust angle question answered. Please do post up some pics. Build logs are a great way to share all the details of your build if you have been taking pictures along the way.

3dNater, I should have documented the build but unfortunately I did not. I will only be able to share completed picture(s). I did received most but not all of my electronics today so that gets me a little closer to completing the build... not holding my breath that they make it with tomorrow's mail ;).

I would like share something if I may.

I have be on numerous forums during my limited flying experience not always as a registered user but visiting, researching, reading, and sometimes asking questions. I have read enough at other forums where people are belittled, talked down to, argued with, and seen more than I care to have seen questions being danced around avoiding the answer someone sought after. The list goes on and on, but I will stop there. I want to thank all of you and the staff here for making this a nice forum to come to, I appreciate the work, dedication, and comradery. I came here looking for a new home so to speak and I feel that I have found it.

Take care,
Rich B.

Awesome Rich, thanks for those words, that makes all the work we do behind the scenes worth it when we hear feedback like that!
