Is expo really needed.

Expo is all about 'servo angular movement' vis-a-vis 'control surface's angular movement'; which is Trigonometry; therefore non-linear. soft centre may be needed in some aeroplane, may not be needed in some, more often than not it is more than a personal preference. I would call it a combo of preference and need of the bird.

I take time in getting this damn thing right (as right as i can for my kinda of flying and stick hold (which is pinch with thumb on top like Barnes & James above)
