Anodizing

My goal here is to post the process I used for Anodizing parts. I wasn't sure where to place this so if it fits better somewhere else move it. :untroubled:

First is my Disclaimer....

Anodizing involves working with dangerous chemicals which can be deadly. What I post here is an account of my on experience. I am not responsible for any damaged or hurt people, parts, environment, pets and etc... Don't try this at home... I also do not claim to be a subject matter expert. I am sure many folks know much more than I concerning this process and I welcome their input.

Well here goes.

Over the next few days (in my spare time) my plan is to anodize a DLE 55 RA stock muffler. The plane this mill belongs to is a Extreme Flight 88" Edge 540, covered in Red, white, blue, and silver. Since the plane base color is red I decided that I wanted to anodize the spinner and muffler red. I did the spinner a few weeks back and now the muffler.

To get started the part needs to be completely clean. To begin the cleaning process I stared with some citric degreaser called de-solve it. A friend suggested this to me for cleaning off oil residue from planes after a day of flying. Stuff works great. :chuncky: Next I moved the part to a soap and water bath and scrubbed it. Given the muffler has a rough texture already I decided to use some aluminum brightener. The brightener lets off some nasty vapors so I did this part outside in a well ventilated area. After 5 minutes of the aluminum brightener back to the soap and water bath and scrub the part some more. Cleaning is one of the most important parts to this process. Any imperfections are magnified in the final finish. I have learned it is very important to get the part perfectly clean in all the areas that are important to be seen.

So the part is almost clean and that is all I had time for tonight. I plan tomorrow to finish cleaning then begin the anodizing.

note to self, make sure if you do the anodizing, do it BEFORE using the muffler and save all those cleaning steps
