Looks like a very nice chuck. So the chuck has a clutch?

Made a jig for the nosewheel while watching glue dry. Need to get it TIG welded now.

The 1/8" X 3" x 36" sheeting for this plane came from a Hostetler 30% Decathlon kit that I picked up for $100. This sheeting was put with the sheeting from a 30% Hostetler Chipmunk kit, each sheet was weighted, the weights ranged between 20 grams and 65 grams. I think there will be more than...

While the glue is drying I worked on the nosewheel yoke. Decided to make a new yoke rather than scab pieces on the side. Need to grind the old yoke off and make a jig to hold while welding. Started to pre-bend the balsa sheeting

I got the 3/4" tube from Dragon Plate https://dragonplate.com/Roll-Wrapped-Twill-Finish-Round-Tubes. I plan to make my own tubes out of fiberglass. Clearwater Composites has a large selection as well. I look around quite a bit online. Somewhere I read that the CF tubes are one and half times...

Ordered a 3/4" OD carbon fiber tube for the stabalator. Was planning to use the old carbon tube from the original Cherokee but decided to order a tube with more wall thickness after doing some beam calculations, unfortunately I had to buy a 72" long tube to get the bigger wall thickness.

Work continues on the fuselage stringers. The bottom and right side are completed, started working on the left side this morning. The formers have laser etched marks for the location on the stringers, of course they are mostly wrong so each stinger needs laid out individually with a square and...

Was out yesterday morning flying with my friend Kenny, he was up in the air when this Sport Cub flew over low and waved this wing, Kenny landed his 35% Yak and the Sport Cub proceeded to land on the field, he was followed by Cub. Both pilots were flying cross county to North Carolina and...

Silver brazed a thrust collar on and cleaned the remaining weld off. Block is installed and now I can frame it the stringers around the opening. The strut sticking out below the block in the photo will be shorten once the control mechanism is finalized. The original Cherokee had a rudder...

Next flipped block over and milled the flanges for mounting screws. These are parallel to the milled side of the block. Finally with the mill set at a fixed height, rotated and clamped the block about the bored hole and put a crude radius on it. As you can see the little tubes are removed...

Yea that's a Rambler for sure. Time to make the nosewheel bearing block. Started with a 2" x2" x 2" piece of material, for reference it weighted 212 grams before starting. Chucked up in the four jaw off center, drilled 1/2" through hole, then bored to .632", 002" clearance for the nosewheel...

While waiting for glue to dry decided to have a look at the nose wheel which I will need before I close up the bottom. The plans show Sierra hardware but I bought Robarts. I had 1/2" Robostruts on the original Cherokee and they held up very well over the 7 years of flying. I didn't care for...

That is what the plans call for, probably a rectal pluck on Wendell's part. It was rather flimsy before the the balsa sheet was added. I would image it is standard for his designs. This is my first build using Hosteler plans. I have all the sheets fitted and now gluing both sides equally to...

No lite ply yet, the sides are 1/16" birch ply and the firewall is 3/8" birch, the rest is balsa. More filling the sides with 1/4" balsa today.

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% PA-28 Cherokee Build

The plans indicate that the sides from the firewall back to the third member get filled with 1/4" balsa sheet. I decided to use scrap balsa from the scrap drawer to do this so there is a bunch of small pieces of various sizes, just using up scrap material to the extent possible. Added the five...

Started framing the fuselage, the 1/4" square balsa is a little skimpy. I broke at three times while fitting the cross pieces. Hopefully once everything is sheeted with 1/8" balsa it will not matter.

I have the first side completed and removed from the bench, it came up easy so I think I will switch to parchment paper in the future. I was able to reuse the parchment paper so both side should be identical since the straight edges were not moved. The second side is started, should finish...

More gluing, added the vertical members. I also lengthen the rear of the fuselage by 1 1/4", I plan to use a stabilitor rather than the traditional stab/elev shown on the plans. I plan to use a carbon fiber tube running in a laid up fiberglass sleeve bearing. The original Cherokee had a...
