Hi glad to be here. My favorite plane is an Edge 540 in any size. I live in Northern Nevada and fly from my little ranch for the most part. I also am a member of the Las Vegas Radio Control Club so when I go down to vegas I always try to get some fun in with those guys/gals. As of late I met some guys at a park in carson city and they are into the 3D foamies so I started to mess with those too and I am having as much fun (less money spent).

Welcome to the site! I used to fly with the LVSC when I lived there, hope to get back again one day.

Joe - you already have some great advice from the other guys - you mentioned insurance concerns - suggest you join the AMA (the one for RC modelling, not the one for Doctors). Will help get you access to many club sites that require it, gives you a basic, common sense set of saftey rules. Given your pref for quads, good to note that they are engaging the politicians and regulatory agencies on behalf of the hobbyist.

Secondly, you mention the field house - you could make many new friends if you can get the indoor site available for flying. In my area, this ususally involves a modest fee of $5-10 per hour per AMA pilot - Goes typically to the general fund of the organization - kinda like a bake sale. Ususally limits the aircraft to 10-12 oz - but lots of indoor fun to be had within those constraints.

Lastly and most important - have fun - do what makes you smile (or laugh out loud)

Thanks a lot alawson999[\mention] that is all excellent advice!

I'm hoping I can fly better than I can bake. :)

Joe,
This IS great advice. I will add emphasis to the AMA route. It's the insurance and political support network. The ease of acquiring quads and multi rotors and the relative ease of use (often underestimated by uninitiated consumers and misrepresented by manufacturers) has caused problems. This is a huge issue for the hobby going forward so anyone you know or see interested really needs to be associated with the present "governing" organization which is AMA http://www.modelaircraft.org/
There have all ready been several accidents, injuries and lawsuits so we have to mentor those we see that these are not toys and can cause some hurt and lawmakers are watching. We also have to urge enthusiasts to get some assistance and help like you have here Joe. Thanks for caring enough to get some advice. Pass it on. Of course this goes for ALL RC endeavors but the multirotor and aerial photography craze has really surfaced the problem of non AMA members causing issues by being uneducated on the proper use.
+1 on the indoor flying. I'm trying to get the use of a school gym. Again, make sure you contact AMA since I'm sure the school will talk insurance. Good luck.

I probably wont be able to get down for that event. I am going to be down in vegas a few times in the spring for a few events. I would like to get to the Eugene event though and do some Video and Photo of it for a DVD. It seems like a lot of the west coast guys get left out for some of the big events like Joe Nall and XFC so I want to be able to put some of that out there. I am not using this as an advertisement though. As far as the flying from home I have a mini ranch as I like to call it and have a runway here that I need to do some work to. And I would love to host a event here someday.

LVRCC is a darn good bunch of people and I totally felt at home with them from the first time I was at the field. I lived in Vegas for awhile and my uncle and I ran a soaring business out of the Jean Airport which was gobs of fun along with lots of free flight time to build up hours. But unfortunately it was a part time thing and we both had other things going on in our lives at the time so we moved on. I am up in N. Nevada now so I do have to plan out a drive down to Vegas because its a 400 mile trip. I wish they were a bit closer but thats how it goes. I have been to a couple clubs up here but they are just not for me. So I fly from home or occasionally with some park flyer guys in Carson City when its nice weather. Hey what can I say I am a fair weather flyer I want 80-90 degrees all year long :) Anyhow glad to meet you guys on here and hope to see some of you face to face someday.

Hi guys! Thanks for the warm welcome 3DMIKE and dth7. Here's a little about me and what brings me here. I'm currently in Central Indiana and I've been interested in RC flying stuff for quite some time. About 10 years ago, I had an RC Airplane that I didn't do so well with. It was a trainer, so not much of a loss. Over the last 10 years, other types of flying machines have become available and the electrics have proliferated. Over a year ago, I got in on the Robot Dragonfly Indiegogo campaign, but still have no idea if and when I will be getting anything from that.

Recently, my company recently acquired a MakerBot Replicator 2, 3D Printer for employee use. Employees have been having a great time printing out nameplates, monitor stands, and other tchotchkes, but there's been no attempts to make something that's a little bit more functional and letting people know what the capabilities of the printer really are. While out on Thingiverse, found plans for the MikeyB's Crossfire Quadcopter. I saw a few of his videos and knew that this was something that I had to build, despite the fact that I have no current knowledge on quad-copters or the components they require. I'm here to learn more about the components that others have outfitted their DIY Quadcopters with and what sorts of equipment I will need to "get off the ground" per-se. Yesterday, I finished printing the basic parts that I would need and was ready for the electronics, with still very little idea of what I need (but learning a little more every day thru constant research). Being the prolific creator that MikeyB is, he released a Crossfire 2 a few days ago. Many had made improvement suggestions and he incorporated many of those into the new version. Fortunately with the new version, he also released a quite nice build document with information on what components he has used...so that's giving me some direction. What's not included is information on what radio and receiver I should use, as well as battery charging equipment, etc. Yeah, I need it all. This is turning into a more expensive proposition than I thought it was going to be, but also, more fun.

So that's about it. I'm a total noob. I don't expect someone to just provide me a list and say "buy all this stuff", but being pointed in the direction of a few good threads by the guys that really know what they are doing, would be *very* helpful. Thanks again for welcoming me into your great community.

Wow a quad made from a 3d printer! Love it. You will have to take lots of pics of that build! There are a lot of guys that can help you with the components you will need but weight and dimensions will be necessary for anyone to give you some good input. Start a new thread for this fun project! Here is our multi-rotor section on the site! http://www.3drcforums.com/forumdisplay.php?120-Multirotor Can't wait to see how it turns out!
