Hobbico Advertising Team Wins "Creative Ad of the Year" Award

At the 2015 Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) Expo this January, Model Aviation magazine presented Hobbico with its coveted "Creative Ad of the Year" trophy — an award that honors creativity, visual impact, and success at conveying the desired message.

Any ads printed in Model Aviation last year were eligible. Finalists were selected by the magazine's staff and voted on by AMA members at ModelAviation.com.

This story really began in June 2014, however, when designer Jeremy Motley proposed a clever concept for an ad series to promote the RealFlight Mobile app. "Let's show men stuck in familiar, boring situations when they'd rather be flying. Then we explain that RealFlight Mobile is the answer."

Senior Marketing Manager Gordy Cockburn loved it. The creative team of designer, writer and photographer then set to work. For the initial ad's concept, Jeremy suggested they picture a married man waiting glumly outside a fitting room while his wife tries on clothes. "It was a perfect way to tell the story," he says. "Most married guys can identify with this situation."

But when Jeremy and photographer Neil Burke scouted for locations, they discovered that no store would give permission for photos to be taken in their fitting rooms. So how was the ad's attention-getting image achieved? Through Hobbico Advertising ingenuity!

What you see in the ad is actually a PhotoShop-assembled composite of over a half-dozen separate elements. Neil photographed the bored husband — gamely portrayed by GP Credit's Daniel Snodgrass — in his Hobbico studio. Jeremy created some parts digitally and found others, such as the "powerfully pink" wall, on stock photography websites. The assembled image looks like a single photograph and perfectly sets the scene.

Now came time to connect the situation to the solution. "We built a bridge in these ads from the image to the product using just a few words," explains copywriter John Garion. "In all three, the image and copy make it instantly clear that when you're bored, RealFlight Mobile can make time fly."

"The collaboration between the members of this creative team is what resulted in the perfect ads," says Vice-President of Corporate Development Chris Slater-Vohs. "It's a clever, and effective, ad campaign."

AMA members and Model Aviation magazine agree. In addition to the magnificent trophy, Hobbico also received free placement for a full-page color ad in a future issue of the magazine. Congratulations to Jeremy, Neil, John and everyone involved on a fantastic job!
