Discussion The I’m going out flying thread 2018

I went out flying today! 50 degrees and 5-10 mph winds, but steady and right down the runway! Got 3 rounds of 2018 Basic down and had fun. Sorry no photos too busy flying and trying to warm back up.

Depends where you are in the state. The mountains get snow although this is not a good year up there yet. We are out on the plains where it may snow one day and may get up to 60 degrees the next.

A good day yesterday. Not too chilly and not very windy very pleasant flying weather for January. 5 flights on the newly repaired QQ Extra. :fist_pump:

OK after verifying the center of gravity was alright I tried another flight yesterday. The results were worse than the previous flight. :very_angry: The plane acted like it was possessed. :steamer: I managed to get it down safely and parked it on a table. WTFO? Well it finally came to me to...

OK here's a workshop dump of the re-assembly of the QQ YAK 54: Throttle servo installed, Fuel dot, Switch and Ignition, I like the bright lights! Not much more to go and this little Yak goes back into the sequence! :)

Battery all the way to the firewall. The assembly manual states "The location of the center of gravity for the QQ Extra 300 is aligned with the FRONT EDGE of the RADIO HATCH." So I agree it's nose heavy here. I didn't move the battery very far back but the plane sure behaved tail heavy on that...

I haven't touched the setup in the Aura other than to match up the radio trims. I'm comfortable with the way it flies on the low rate setting and stabilization on. I might have bumped up the expo on my radio I'll have to check.

I tried last Monday. I was using a new battery and didn't check the CG. I must have installed it too far back because the plane was terribly pitch sensitive. I managed to get it landed but popped out the new gear and lg plate. I'ts repaired and waiting for my next fly day. I would have sworn...

The QQ Extra isn't naked anymore. A little overspray here and there and there. Masking is tedious work for me. I like it now got to go fly it.

Winner winner chicken dinner! It turns out that while EPO doesn't like heat, it doesn't care about acetone.

Actually it was the carbon fiber spring that de-laminated causing the tiller to bend. Good luck with it.

The 'What did you do in your workshop tonight?' thread

Just a friendly heads up. I tried one of those on my QQ Yak. I found the spring to be very soft which allowed the tiller bar to bend. If you look closely at the end of the tiller it is threaded to match threads in the aluminum carrier. Very fragile I've repaired mine twice with JB Weld and added...

OK an update. Ultracote is out the foam doesn't like the heat. It swells up like pimples on a 16 year old. It's down to paint or how about vinyl? I haven't seen much activity from @decaldennis. Might be worth an e-mail discussion.

I replaced the fuselage on the crashed QQ Extra. Thanks to an idea from @49dimes it has new legs now as well. Going to be much better than the flimsy wire landing gear. No wheel pants now. Usually they go right into the trash due to our primitive runways. I've got one more challenge and...

Yeah, I was thinking about trying the plate idea as well. I'm just about done leveling things up. I'll give it a go this afternoon. Thanks!

Permission to hi-jack the thread? @49dimes, what adhesive did you use on the gear block in the QQ Extra? I'm debating 30 min epoxy vs Gorilla Glue. Also thinking of some carbon fiber rods 2-3" through the gear block into the foam above? How is yours holding up?
