Been flying R/C for a long time, should be better at it by now. Up until a couple of years ago, I was mostly into (too seriously into, in fact) precision aerobatics: first pattern, then IMAC. Now, I'm trying to learn 3D, and it's great fun, like learning to fly all over again. Gets your heart rate up.
Here's the story behind the profile picture. In the mid-80’s I flew R/C in Salt Lake City at a terrific little state-owned park out towards the lake. One day another of the pattern flyers ran out of fuel and borrowed some of mine. At the end of the day, he came over and said, “To pay you back for the fuel, I’ll take you upside down in my biplane.” Guess what, I said yes. Couple weeks later I met him at a small uncontrolled strip a few miles outside of town. He rolled out this immaculate Stearman (with Army colors) from the hangar. Surely no Stearman in actual service was ever so clean. After a bit of preflight, quite a bit longer than what I do for R/C, we took off, no radio just “help me look out of traffic”, and we spent an hour cruising around the Wasatch front. We never actually went upside down, but it was a great ride and this picture always brings back a smile. The picture is pretty blurry, but if you look hard you can see the Wasatch Range in the background.
(This Stearman picture has been replaced).
It's all about having fun, yes?
