PAU 30% Sukhoi SU-26 ARF 50-60cc

OK, so I was talking with Herve at PAU last week about something non related and happened to mention that I am dismantling a 60cc plane that I had built for IMAC (Sold it because I quickly learned IMAC is more fun with a larger plane). So now I have a plane full of equipment on the shelf.....and we all know that's not a good thing!!!

So Herve mentioned he has a fresh batch of 30% Sukhoi planes all with the latest structure and design looking for homes. I have to say that I've tried a few "Yak's" in my day and never really felt at home with them and never really thought about a "Sukhoi". After a few E-mails and watching a few videos I was pretty excited about this design so I said "let's do this"!!!

I bought my first PAU a few years ago immediately after returning from Joe Nall and seeing them in action and one thing that attracted me was that they are very scale looking planes and yet they have excellent performance! After looking at the website it even says right on the page "A Sukhoi that really looks like the SU-26!" http://flypau.com/5060cc-c-1_4/sukhoi-su-26m-50-to-60cc-p-12.html I did some poking and the performance in the videos looks great. Having designed a few planes of my own I know that good looks and great performance are two things that are really hard to combine.

- I am going to do a few fun things with this build, first off a build thread (Welcome! glad you made it here!).

- The second is I am going to do another thread or article as a "mini how to..." with regards to "tuning an airframe" buy doing knife edge mixing and other helpful setup tips. You paid for it, put that fancy computer radio to work or you are cheating yourself!!

- The third is we are taking this thing on a Fall PAU / GSN tour! First stop will be the Black Hills Huckfest next week, then I'm going to shoot for Council Bluffs labor day, DesMoines Huckfest in Sept. and maybe the Tulsa 3D bash in October. If you are there, and want to fly it, I'll wireless buddy box you as long as you write your name down. I want to see how many people I can get to fly this thing before Winter!!!

So, box showed up late today, lets take a look at this thing and get to work!!!

Unboxed plane, quick sneak, more later......

They have a very well written assembly manual on the website so you can print it or check it out on your PC, or device since it's in .pdf format: https://flypau.com/html/sukhoi/PAU30Sukhoi.pdf

Let me take a stab at someone that may have helped write it.....hmmmm?

Yup, lots of detailed pictures and everything in a sensible order so great for ARF assemblers new and old.

OK, so I have a few engine options on hand. I have a DLE60 twin that's coming out of the other plane that I sold....nice little engine, but just not the strongest, going on my wifes Cub. I have a DLE55 coming off the cub, but that fits the P-47 too good. So I'm left with a NIB DLE61 with stock muffler and an EME70 twin that I bought for a scale Winter project. The EME I'm not really sure of, I'm more of a DA / DLE kinda guy but figured I'd try one on a scale project and it weighs 16oz exactly more than the DLE61. I don't have a DA70 that is not already in service but that would be an interesting since the DA70's are nothing short of amazing.

So, we're going to roll with the DLE61 with a shout out to Supa Tim for the prop advice. Just for others that may be interested the EME twin has over 1.5" of clearance so it would fit without any holes and I have a strong suspension that the DA70 will too, even with straight plugs. If it did require a hole, it would be minimal.

Oh Great. Now you have another build thread I have to subscribe to. :p

This is the only 30% PAU plane I have not had yet but I'm trying to talk a local Hobby Shop owner out of his. He won it at the XFC in a drawing. No luck so far.

Alright I need to sneak out for a quick maiden flight at some point today but let's take a look at what's included. Got it all out last night to let it acclimate, normally I like a couple of days to acclimate but we don't have time!!!!

Looking at the fuse it is much lighter than I expected, very nice design lightened in the right places and strong in the right places. Looks like it's canister ready and the socketed wing area looks good. Nice that they left out that little skin above and below the socket that most round cowl planes use. It always just breaks and looks like crap and serves little purpose anyway.

Another positive that I see is stab placement!! I'm doing a little research on the full scale this AM and it not only matches the scale outline but should provide some really cool tail authority and stable harrier

Looking at the surfaces it looks like a very nice sized rudder for a plane this size and the stabs and look good as well with that perfect "less than scale" throw!!!! I also must say that this is the most sexy round cowl I've ever seen!
