GP 61 -Discussion thread

Thought I would kick off the engine forum with a thread on the GP 61 :)

Lets hear from those of you that have one, how has it been preforming and how do you like it?

I have had mine somewhere around a year now, it has never given me trouble what so ever! I have somewhere around 10-15 gallons burned, maybe up to 20. I have never kept track, I suppose I should start logging my engines though, really.

It may seem one sided here, but I seriously do not have one single complaint about this motor, beyond eye candy stuff. It would be nice if it was shiny :D

I have had it in my rebuilt Pilot Yak 54 the whole time, which was a total wreck rebuilt from the lazer cut pieces from Pilot. I'd say 75% or so of the plane was toothpicks. The GP 61 that replaced the DA 50 originally, just flat yanks the thing around. I dont do much 3D right now, more IMAC/Pattern style flying really.. but getting more and more interested in 3D every day.

So lets hear how your GP is doing!

Only 10 flights on my 61 and it's a rocket ship on a smooth pipe from Lorne falcon 24x9 never had any problems with it at all

I put a GP61 in place of a 9 year old DA50 in a Carf 2.3 meter Extra 330L. The power has been great considering it's pulling a 21.75 pound airplane.

I've got 9 flights on it so far and apart from getting the first start of the day technique figured out it runs great. The majority of the time after the first start it will start with one flip. I'm running a homemade adapter to the DA50 shorty header into a TD75K canister. At this point I'm getting 6700 or so with a Falcon carbon fiber 24 X 9.

I've been hearing what sounds like detonation when revving the throttle taxiing back after a flight. I had checked the timing before the first flight using the measurement method and came up with 29 so I left it. Tonight I put my degree wheel on it and it was actually over 30 so I turned it back to 28. Will see how it runs there.

So far I'm very happy with the GP61. I'm going to try it again Sunday weather permitting.

I've got a fair amount of GP61 time. Have 3 of them, (2 flying at the moment) and absolutely love them. For comparison, I've also owned the DLE55, DLE55RA, DLE61, and EME60. GP61 by far and away has the most power. Mine are both spinning a 24x10 on stock side dump at the moment, one Xion and one Falcon.

My newest one is on my RedwingRC 89" Extra 330:

Did the maiden on it this past weekend. Set both needles to 1.5" each, and she popped in about 10 flips, and started in another 5 or so. Two flights, no problems, and the 24x10 Xion prop was ripping slightly. Perfect....

What pipe are you using? Looking to use one of these GP61's on an 89 slick and thinking about trying one of the planebender smooth pipes, but I have never ventured out side of using stock or pitts exhausts.

Yep a planebender smooth pipe. It will drag that slick around like crazy. I hate to say it lol but my 3dhs edge could use a smaller motor the 61 is that powerful on the pipe lol. But it's soo much fun it will hover around a 1/4 throttle .wow does that pipe sound sweet

I have had problems starting mine, Jetpainter; What is your start sequence? Also, my timing is as advanced as it can go but it looks that way form the factory. Should I retard it a bit?

Good info! I hear you on power my edge has a DA-70 in it and is the same way, but I do like the power. What header and any tip or tricks to setting up the pipe?

When I had my 61, it was airplane/ignition on. Full choke, engine at IDLE, flip til it popped, remove choke, 5 flips. Again, engine at idle. I don't see any reason to start an engine at anything above an idle.

Mine also had a touch of a midrange burble, but I tried to tune it out, but with a leaner needle on the L, it wouldn't take a rapid transition on the ground.

nebwake, was your advanced from the factory? If so, try setting it in the middle of the adjustment range.
