Advice/Opinion on an engine

I will be starting my build of a 42% Challenger II by the end of December, looking at doing the Bulldog II scheme. I aim to keep it around 30lbs, the mfg recommends a 100cc engine, wingspans is 86.6" and a length of 88.6". I want this one to be more capable of 3D flight than my normal scale builds, I need to have some fun thrashing about.
So my question is what cc, brand, and where in the states to get it?

30lbs with all that drag to have snappy performance I'm guessing 120-150cc would be the sweet spot. If it were me, and I knew it was going to come in at 30'ish, I'd look at the wing loading and see if it would fit a 150.

A 100cc engine on something like this would probably be marginal in performance. If it were me, 3W all the way. A 110 would be sweet. Plenty of ponies... and at 6.72 pounds, it'd be pretty tough to beat the 12.8 horse and wide variety of props it would spin.

Or maybe if a 150 size will fit, like Terry suggested and I absolutely agree, how about the 3dub 157. At 8.66 pounds and nearly 18 horse, there wouldn't be anything you could not do with that plane. I absolutely love mine in my 260. (And she weighs 42 pounds) No such thing as too much power.

There is also the option of a 120cc power plant. DA makes a solid 120cc motor. But would be concerned with balance issues. 4.95 pounds.

Or the DLE 120. At 6.13 total pounds, it might be easier to get that bipe to balance. Pretty much the same props as the DA but considerably less in price.

There is also the GP123 and from what I have been hearing (and) seeing first hand, they are a beast of a motor. At just over 5 pounds and swings about the same size props as the DA and DLE, but with massive authority. Dave Sullivan is one of the nicest guys you will ever talk to. You can also give @SupaTim a call. He and @Spats can give you all the awesome details on this motor.

There is also the option of a ZDZ 112B2 twin. Though I have no experience with this particular motor, I hear they run superbly. And @Flyrcjoe is probably one of the most knowledgeable people on this motor you can talk to.

Those are the options I myself would look at in doing this plane. I myself would probably look very seriously at the 3w 110. But that is just me and my liking.

The two of you have confirmed my thoughts. I am sure nose weight would likely be needed and agree more power is a good thing. Initially I was thinking maybe a 120 but if it came in more around 35lbs a 120 starts getting smallish. I am thinking maybe a DLE 170 would fit the bill for added weight and should be ample power. I like that 3W 157 but the DLE fit's my need's better on this one. I do have a Stearman that will be a scale build and a perfect fit for the 3W 157.

I have a DLE 111, what do you guys think would be a good airframe for it?

If it's the latest version with the small reed cage, they make great power, perfect for a aerobatic plane in the 27lb range.

Regarding the DLE170, they are a good strong engine but it will be a thumper considering your wingspan. If the plane is close to that 32lb range you can consider a used DA 150, they are cheap,a trip to DA makes sure they are like new and they are super smooth nice running engines. A good 32x10 and your set.

I have two 111's. Both are phenomenal running engines. Had a PAU 300 that came in just over 29 lbs. Also have one on a Pilot Edge. Its weight is just at 27. Pretty much any airframe you toss that motor in is going to preform well. Just keep it under 30 and you'll be golden.

Just a little playin' in the wind.

The GP look's pretty good, just not sure with the listed prop sizes if it would be enough if the model came in around 35lbs. There have been mention above of a couple guys with experience in this engine, would be nice to hear what they think.
Give Tim a call at Northwest RC. Super guy and definitely will answer any questions you may have.
