It was stupid to be flying right over the skier.

Don't know the full story of it but remember guys we as modelers have had close calls like this at events before due to failures. Whether it be the pilot or the machine. Only difference is these were mostly at RC flying sites. Sadly failures happen on either side of the hobby... :(

Multi rotors are awesome for other applications. I just feel for live sporting events it's not ready yet.

No, the guy was part of the professional camera crew covering the event. They were requested not to fly directly over the course, but rather to stay off to the sidetrack a bit. But you know the MR/AP guys, can't get the Kewl Shot that way, so........

Apparently a complete power failure. I have not heard exactly what happened yet, but these skiers can hit 100 mph and have only minimal protection on. It may not have killed the guy, might have, but at the very least it would likely have been a career ending event. All so some @$$hat with a drone could "get the shot".
Last time I went snowboarding I was watching th skiers and I thought they were going fast just on the basic level! Couldn't imagine trying to fly a quad to keep up with them...

So they have the suspended camera's over the field at football games. If the camera were to fall, would it be a big deal and people freak out? I realize it is not exactly an apples to apples comparison and have some major differences, but just wondering.

DRONES......A remotely operated device or craft capable of performing the same duties as manned craft.
Modern drones have the extended capability of autonomy. Much of the worlds military's have operated "drones"
for targeting exercises and training for many decades.

POP CULTURE........Popular Social behaviors displayed with esoteric uniformity with popular media formats such as "drones"

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the skier has a web site and/or promo films promoting himself that has a bunch of those Kewl Shots. The skier is now upset, but you know the old adage about no one being more righteous than a reformed w****. The same is true about the event operator who has now banned "drones" from all future events, but probably has used footage from them in promotional materials.

Finally, if this had been a manned aircraft, we would all be extolling the skill and bravery of the pilot in arranging to miss anything important on the ground.
