Ugggg sorry man, that's no fun. I'm a little curious how it got stuck in the first place. Those bolts are pretty tough... guessing it was over torqued a bit (stretched the bolt) and/or locktitie? Given that the bolt snapped would concern me, either poor quality hardware or you did something it didn't like (we've all been there!). Darnit

Yeah, the bolts tend to be tough.. This was a design error of my own making when I installed the prop.. I misaligned this hole when drilling the prop (wooden prop) and then had to really use force to get the bolt in. So, guess an toxic combination of over torque and misalignment is probably the cause.

This was against better judgment.. but due to time constrains I did not make time to do the final fit and now paid the "price" I guess.

Hello again everyone, it's been about a year since I've posted. Dug my partially completed timber out of storage this week and plan on continuing! Moved across the country, new job, new house..... But it's time to get this puppy in the air!! I reread the entire thread. Very interesting developments! Thank you all for your posts and info. I am questioning my engine choice now (DLE-55ra) due to the structure issues. I have already installed the X-Cub main and have 8" Airtops. My biggest hurdle now is servos. The required equipment calls for the Spektrum A6380. They have 160 oz/in of torque. Couple that with the 1.5" arm and bad geometry. Will the called for equipment really work in this plane? I'm asking due to budget. Flying style will be Sport/STOL at 10,200 elevation. (Leadville, CO.)

Hello,
Good to hear that dig it out.. its a far to fun flying airframe to be a hangar queen..

As to the DLE55.. I got a RCGF56cc in the T-110 and have not had any significant issues. Its nice to have the extra power when you load it up with the XCub main and the Airtops.. Just check the frame regularly for cracks.. It do get shaken about from the engine vibrations and H9 isn't always to generous about the glue... (I did add epoxy to the joints in the forward section of the frame though, that may have helped me from getting any issues....)

As to servos, I use the Hitec HS-5685MH they are on the budget side of the scale I'd say and works fine. Note that they are to wide to fit inside the stab. Cant recall what servo I used there....

Thanks @SjtStriker. I'm excited to get it in the air. What length servo arms did you use? I've done most of the reinforcement that @AKNick has done around the cabin area. I'm going to order some covering and open up the top of the fuse down to the tail and do some X bracing. With it on the bench, minimal pressure on the stab and the fuse flexes A LOT !! Big wrinkles in the covering while flexing it.

personally, I do like the DLE55RA on this plane. Just keep in mind you’ll need some tail weight, have less prop clearance, and to be careful stressing the airframe out with the extra weight/power. I fly sport scale and mild 3D with it. I think the GP38 would be a great engine for this airframe... but the DLE55RA is great as well for hovering and easy starting.

I think strategically supporting the lite ply is a good idea inside the frame.

3mm blind nuts for the struts, as the stock ones are junk

Barely shorten the xcub middle struts to get you more ground clearance

as far as the servos, get something that’s high torque and metal gear. The hitec 5x series won’t center a large surface that well in my experience. Not saying those particular servos are bad. I love picking out servos. :)

Let me know what you need help with, I’m happy to help!!

Thanks man I appreciate that! What is considered (High Torque)? I have a set of Spektrum A6380s "in the box" they spec at 160 oz/in of torque. These are the servos they call for in the book. They are "High volt (8.4) High Torque (160 oz/in @ 8.4) and metal gear". Do you think that would be enough torque?

AKNIck has a very good point vs the Hitec HS5 series, but as I said, they work fine with my type of flying (Lazy sunday flying and STOL - I dont do any major acro or 3D with it..) I do not know the Spectrum world, but from what I see on the spec if you push 8,4V you get about the same performance as I have with my HS-5685MH so I would say that if you should be fine if you go easy.

I used the recommended sized alu servo arms without any issues..

Try this link. Several tools are available for browsing, by brand or comparisons.

Below is a screenshot of the servos installed in my Python because I was curious the other day.

I think you’ll have just as much fun as I do with those servos lol! But really, they’ll work just fine. Run then at HV to get the best performance out of them and you’ll be one happy flier. Most people won’t notice over torque. Where the 250 Oz/in+ shines is the full span ailerons and rudder. As at full deflection at speed the ailerons will be hungry. And the rudder needs some extra torque if your relying on it for steering on rough terrain. I prefer faster servos (0.11) when switching directions quickly. BUT this is just a hyper bush plane. Don’t over think it! Go with what ya got!
