Exactly... a P40 should be fast. Very, very fast. Lol.
Yes it did. Hope the guy comes through.

:lol2: Let me know if he bails on you. I feel like I'd be stupid to say no at what you listed it for... I would have had to beat three planes into the ground before it showed up so my wonder woman wife doesn't kill me if I did get it.:msn_slap: Only reason I hesitated HA!!

Pretty sure it is a "Done Deal". I will keep you posted. Thanks bro.

Well gents, it has been a couple of days since we updated the Roto85 powered TF P40. Sooo….what do you say we do a little posting?

I wanted to get the Roto 85fsi mounted so that I could start the glassing process. And actually though it required a little thought process and planning, thanks to my awesome son and his keen "forward thinking" ability, the Roto is pretty much as good as mounted. You all remember that scene in the new Superman Movie where the comment is made, "The son becomes the father, the father becomes the son"? I feel that way sometimes these days. That boy of mine is so detail oriented and so anal when it comes to doing things with these planes. I realize he reads and studies a lot. But most of his talent comes from his brain pan. Which I might add is much larger than mine these days. LOL. It was truly his idea on how to mount this motor. With the foot print being a bit too wide for the firewall, I figured on how to do it. But he is actually the one that gave me the idea of how to execute the construction. I won't go into too much detail as the photos are pretty self explanatory. Suffice it to say, at the close of this evening, the firewall just needs to be drilled for the Roto and wa-laa.

I will explain a couple of things with each photo to help explain our method of mounting. Ok, here we go...photos.

The manual suggests 6 7/8 inches spacing of the cowl to fit the 50-60cc sized motors properly. However with the Roto 85 being 8 11/16" long, it was necessary to cut the firewall out and reset it back in the motor box approximately 1 7/8" to get the right spacing between the back of the spinner back plate and the face of the cowl.

The firewall and motor box prior to any modifications:

Using a drill bit, I chain drilled the parameter of the firewall so that I could get a saw between the fuse sides and the firewall. I needed to do this to remove the original firewall. (My sons idea)

Original firewall cut out and removed.

Making sure I transferred all "thrust" angle lines before cutting anything away.

20191124_132408.jpg

There is a "mid" motor box support that needed to be removed to allow the correct distance for the new firewall to be installed.

20191124_132856.jpg 20191124_134706.jpg

New firewall cut with thrust angle lines.

20191124_141832.jpg 20191124_141847.jpg

I will be cutting off the excess fuse sides after the new firewall is installed. They won't be needed...but we will get to that later.

20191124_141857.jpg

New firewall installed and epoxied in place. I will need to do a little clean up of the inside of the fuse sides.

20191124_150304.jpg 20191124_150321.jpg 20191124_160744.jpg

Here is where the width of the Roto 85 started causing a little grief. But not bad. Since the left fuse side forward of the firewall is only needed to support the forward cowl attachment locations, It is not a big concern to make a "relief" hole for the mounting lugs on the Roto. Now with the Roto trial fit, I cut the remaining excess of the fuse sides and fuse top off and sanded flush.

20191124_160750.jpg 20191124_160756.jpg 20191124_173546.jpg

Because of the width of the Roto, I needed to add an "ear" mounting plate to the outside of the motor box for the left side mounting lugs to attach to. Once epoxied in place, I will attach aluminum angle braces on the back side of the ear and the back side of the firewall on the inside of the motor box. This should keep everything to stay put without any risk of the Roto falling off the motor box. 20191124_173552.jpg 20191124_173558.jpg

So here we have the Roto Motor 85fsi basically set in place and trial fit for alignment. Dang, I do like it when a plan comes together properly.

Dang, I even got the thrust lines lined up with the Roto. Whew...

And here she is fellas....waiting for the mounting lug holes to be drilled. But I will wait until I get the aluminum angle braces put in place. Not bad for a few hours work this afternoon.

I will try to get a little more done on the P40 soon. Work the next few days will slow progress, but I have to get this glassed and painted soon. My son is actually building the baby version of this plane. It is the original Gold Edition 65". He will be using a DLE 20cc on his. It will be really cool for both of us to maiden our P40's together on the same day. Really looking forward to the new flying season.

More later guys.....

I've been eyeing this plane for YEARS ha ha ha. The Kit went away, then it was just the ARF, then the Kit came back, Then bye bye, then the ARF is gone,..... NOW Ready to cover. LOL

I think RTC would be more popular if there were more airframes available. covering is so much more doable than building for a lot of people.

that fillet for the wing/fuselage joint is impressive!

Want yes, let me figure out the logistics over PM... Due to my location.
@stangflyer I sent you a PM yesterday, Curious where you're located and if at your convenience can drop it off at a shipping company for me. I can smell some of my planes burning already to make room. If it's too much hassle let me know. cheers

A little progress on the RTC Giant P40 fellas. Due to the Thanksgiving weekend, I got off work Wednesday around 2:30 and don't have to be back to work until Monday morning. Know what that means right? YEAH BABY! I spent most of yesterday while the girls were preparing a feast for a king (or three), hee hee…. getting the motor box set up to accept the Roto 85fsi. It was a lot more entailed than I thought it would be. Mostly because of the width of the Roto Motor. It has a pretty wide foot print. The vertical is pretty good. Lots of room for that, but the horizontal is really wide. I had to make an extension for the firewall so that I could get the correct thrust angle of the motor. Setting it back approximately 1 and 15/16 inches and adjusting it to the left side took a while, but I think I got it. Got the new firewall epoxied in and the holes for the mounting lugs drilled. I also checked the airframe over really well and though the quality is really pretty top notch, there were a few minor areas that needed a little attention. Filled the imperfections, waited until this morning and lightly sanded those areas out. The fuse is actually ready for glass and painting now.

I spent today mounting the engine and cutting angle braces for the motor box and firewall. Due to the firewall extension, it was necessary to cut three angle braces. One goes on the back side of the extension, one on the left side motor box and one on the right side of the firewall and motor box. Once all three are in place, I highly doubt this engine is going no where. Except yanking that P40 to the moon. LOL.

With the engine now basically bolted down and the fuse ready for glass and paint, I thought I would take a few minutes to inspect the flight control surfaces. This plane is really-really nice. The construction and craftsmanship is very nice. It is so much fun to not have to do a lot of major modifications or imperfection repairs. I decided since the full scale P40 ailerons, elevators and rudder were actually fabric covered, I wanted to do this thing right. Sooo….break out the Solartex covering. It has been quite a number of years since I used this stuff. I had forgotten just how easy it is to use and lay down. This is going to be a really great feature when it comes to painting the TF P40. I started with the left stab elevator just to see if I remembered how to do it. Not like the normal plastic film covering I have been using for the last twenty some odd years. If the rest of the surfaces go as easily and look as good as the first surface, I am confidant this plane is going to be an easy head turner.

Tomorrow I want to get the cowl set and the mounting holes drilled. Then I can remove the engine and start glassing. Oh what fun this plane is proving itself to be.

A few photos...

I'll try to post some more photos and more updates tomorrow fellas.....

Thanks for hanging in there with me on this project.
