Scale 25% Krier Kraft build, a tribute to grampa.

So the last couple of evenings I've been finishing the landing gear. After the epoxy and micro cured I block sanded it out and then went to work on making the wheel pant mounts.

I'm using the Sig wheel pant mounts for wire gear, two per side (an inner and an outer). I first made some hard points out of 1/8" lite ply and beveled the inside edges to match the curvature of the wheel pant.

I glued the hard points in with Epoxy and micro, then I used the mounts as a guide to drill the mount bolt holes. The mounts are then bolted to the inside of the pants using 2-56 cap head bolts and fiber lock nuts. I used the tapered grinding tool on the dremel to chamfer the top edge of the axel hole to accommodate the bend (where the leg becomes the axel).

I like the final result, it looks nice and clean and has a solid mount on both the inside and outside. Also, it doesn't move easily, but if it gets hit the wheel pant will move before they break.... Hopefully lol

Time to make some Slave Struts!

416.jpg

I making them out of some K&S Streamline brass with a 4-40 rod soldered to the inside leading edge, that way I really have a slave strut inside a slave strut.

First one made! I put 4-40 ball links on the ends and ground the streamline brass to an angle. It's a good strong connection, and perfectly free movement... Unfortunately I do have a slight issue.

The small issue I have is I got the top attach point to far forward on the aileron which has the geometry messed up. The top aileron has more down travel than the bottom aileron, to the point the top aileron bottoms out the hinge long before the bottom one does... I got a few fixes in mind I will try after I get the other side done, hopefully I don't have to cut the top ailerons apart but we will see.

Then again, I may just live with it, it really would just be built in differential lol

I like 'em "BIG"!
I remember the Super Skybolt from years ago. Nice flying plane. Your gramps definitely passed on his talent. The Krier Is looking amazing. Your pants process reminds me I need to get busy on mine for the Pitts. I have some mounts like the ones you are using. Now and then I go through my pieces parts and "swear" I need to quit holding on to so much crap. Then I remember, "I may not need it now but there "will" come a time that I will"! So I continue to hord pieces parts. Lol

So excited to see more progress.

Well, after sleeping on it I decided that I had to cut the top ailerons open and move the slave rod attachment aft. After cutting them open and subsequent trial and error I found that the top attachment needs to be 3/8" further aft than the bottom attachments. Then I just had to glue the sheeting patch in and smear some balsa putty on it.

The little patch where I cut the aileron open to move the attach points.

Now the difference in throw from top to bottom is less than 1/16" at full deflection, that's good enough for me!

427.jpg

Next bit of detail work is the corner fairing and teardrop shaped sheeting reinforcement for the cabanes, one down three more to go! The sheeting reinforcements are solely to mimic what grampa did on his.

Little bits at a time, it's getting closer to covering.

Here's a little scale shot :)

In the above photo it seems like the lower wing leading edge is straight all the way to the fuselage rather than having the angle that mimics the upper wing.
Great looking airplane man.

Well, the Krier has a heart! lol The last few days I've been working on finishing up the cabane details and then moved on to getting the engine mounted.

428.jpg

the teardrop shaped fairings around the base of the cabanes are all finished as well as the epoxy and micro filling, a little bit of balsa putty and some finish sanding is all that's left to finish them off.

We have an engine! Yes I know the prop is to big, it's just what I had laying on a shelf ;)

431.jpg

The cowl is just sitting over the engine and is too low in this pic by almost 1/2", hence why it may look a little hinky.

432.jpg

Yep, it's another one of those rear quarter shots lol

433.jpg

Working on making the cowl mounts, these are .050 Chromalloy steel. They will have nut plates flush riveted to the back and then I will use flush washers and countersunk screws to hold the cowl on.

Working on getting the cowl fit!

Yep, the top and bottom wings are exactly the same shape, and because the fuselage is skinnier than the cabanes there is an "elbow" in the bottom wing kinda like a Bucker Jungmiester. The full scale Krier Kraft does not have the elbow in the bottom wing, but this is a sport scale model, and grampa decided not to change the wing design and neither did I :)

Well the list of things needed to complete before covering is getting awfully short!

438.jpg

Matter of fact dad is putting a order of Nitrate and Butyrate dope on his next order from Aircraft Spruce along with the hardware needed to finish my cowl mounts. I'm going to get the Koverall ordered in the next week or so, and I got to get a few things put together to practice on lol.

Before long, she'll have some cloths on! :D
