DA 200

Some interesting data here.

Using the same prop, I will post some data / testing, with before and after replacing the canisters with JTEC mufflers on my DA 200....

flight date: 5/06/2016
flight number # 300 on the DA 200 mag light
number of gallons thru engine = 60
Engine: DA 200 ML
Fuel / oil mix: 40:1 redline
altitude: 260 feet
ambient temperature: 85 F
prop size: Mejzlik 30 x 13 LF EVO
air frame: DALTON 300 ML
radio system: JETI
Exhaust: KS 95 Canisters, X2, rear dump.

data:
1. high temp during flight (not after landing):
RIGHT REAR CYLINDER 225.1 F Temp max during flight, average temp 208 F
LEFT REAR CYLINDER 224.2 F temp max during flight, average temp 184 F
RIGHT FRONT CYLINDER 251.4 F temp max during flight, average temp 228 F
LEFT FRONT CYLINDER 271.5 F temp max during flight, average temp 229.5 F

2. temp range (see 1 above)
3. rpm range 1500 to 7080
4. rpm max during flight 7080
5. rpm max on the ground 6630
6. Rx voltage 8.2
7. Rx voltage minimum during flight 7.9

any unexpected events: (list any info, like deadstick, etc....) Airplane was running well. this flight was 12 minutes long. The flight after this one, the crankshaft twisted and the motor was sent in to DA. They replaced all the damaged parts, and once it returned, I made some changes to the airframe. Biggest of which was to remove the canisters, and install JTEC mufflers.

Here is the data from the 1st flight with the JTEC mufflers:

flight date: 7/15/2016
flight number # 328 on the DA 200 mag light
number of gallons thru engine = 70
Engine: DA 200 ML
Fuel / oil mix: 40:1 redline
altitude: 260 feet
ambient temperature: 96 F
prop size: Mejzlik 30 x 13 LF EVO
air frame: DALTON 300 ML
radio system: JETI
Exhaust: JTEC DA 200 Compact Mufflers

data:
1. high temp during flight (not after landing):
RIGHT REAR CYLINDER 321.9 F Temp max during flight, average temp 295 F
LEFT REAR CYLINDER 241 F temp max during flight, average temp 221 F
RIGHT FRONT CYLINDER 259 F temp max during flight, average temp 229 F
LEFT FRONT CYLINDER 241.3 F temp max during flight, average temp 201 F

2. temp range (see 1 above)
3. rpm range 1500 to 6810
4. rpm max during flight 6810
5. rpm max on the ground 6450
6. Rx voltage 8.2
7. Rx voltage minimum during flight 7.9

this second telemetry post, above, is with the motor way out of tune. It's low needle and high needle were way too rich. I then leaned them out, and the following telemetry post, below, demonstrates what happened:

flight date: 7/16/2016
flight number # 330 on the DA 200 mag light
number of gallons thru engine = 70
Engine: DA 200 ML
Fuel / oil mix: 40:1 redline
altitude: 260 feet
ambient temperature: 96 F
prop size: Mejzlik 30 x 13 LF EVO
air frame: DALTON 300 ML
radio system: JETI
Exhaust: JTEC DA 200 Compact Mufflers

data:
1. high temp during flight (not after landing):
RIGHT REAR CYLINDER 343.3 F Temp max during flight, average temp 298 F
LEFT REAR CYLINDER 249 F temp max during flight, average temp 227 F
RIGHT FRONT CYLINDER 269 F temp max during flight, average temp 231 F
LEFT FRONT CYLINDER 252.8 F temp max during flight, average temp 219 F

2. temp range (see 1 above)
3. rpm range 1200 to 7140
4. rpm max during flight 7140
5. rpm max on the ground 6600
6. Rx voltage 8.2
7. Rx voltage minimum during flight 7.9

at the same time, I also flew another new airplane, and here is set of new data, however, bear in mind, I am using same type motor, and exactly same propeller...

flight date: 7/15/2016
flight number # 8 on the DA 200 light (motor is not broken in yet)
number of gallons thru engine = < 3
Engine: DA 200 Light
Fuel / oil mix: 40:1 redline
altitude: 260 feet
ambient temperature: 96 F
prop size: Mejzlik 30 x 13 LF EVO
air frame: DALTON 300 SP
radio system: JETI
Exhaust: KS 95 Canisters, X2, rear dump.

data:
1. high temp during flight (not after landing):
RIGHT REAR CYLINDER 252.8 F Temp max during flight, average temp 239.5 F
LEFT REAR CYLINDER 284 F temp max during flight, average temp 268 F
RIGHT FRONT CYLINDER 264.2 F temp max during flight, average temp 238.1 F
LEFT FRONT CYLINDER 301.1 F temp max during flight, average temp 254.8 F

2. temp range (see 1 above)
3. rpm range 1200 to 7350
4. rpm max during flight 7350
5. rpm max on the ground 6650
6. Rx voltage 8.2
7. Rx voltage minimum during flight 7.9

this 4th telemetry post, is of a different airplane, but using a brand new DA 200 Light, and 2 into 1 headers, which i lengthened the header by 1.25" compared to stock, (to allow the stinger exit to be in an appropriate placement in the bottom of the fuselage).

But what I have learned,

the 1st airplane, had, higher RPM, back when the flights were in 100's, not 300's, but as flights accumulated, the canisters get carbon build up, and this lowers performance over time. SO the second airplane, I will expect, over time, to get lower RPM. I will, however, clean them out, once I get to 300 flights.

I had spoken to someone in DA, and to break in a 200, will take about 10 gallons of fuel. I do not want to start an oil thread on here, but, if you start with synthetic, it may take longer to break in, compared to using mineral oil.

I always break in with the oil I will use, which is synthetic from Day 1.
