3DHS Edge 106" Build Thread

Hi guys, Posted this on the other forum so I'd thought I'd use my first post on here to share it on here also!.

Thanks to Paul at 3DHS UK I was able to purchase a 106" Edge earlier than the official 3DHS worldwide release (this was down to the Production line timing and when 3DHS UK's shipment was due to leave the factory.

My set-up -

DA120
Zimmerman Canisters (No Noisy Stock Mufflers Here http://www.GiantScaleNews.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif ) 70mm drop headers
JR 8921HV's x2 (Elevators) 2" arms
Hitec 7950's x 4 (Ailerons) 2" arms
Hitec 7955's x 2 (Rudder) 1.5" arms on Dual Push/Pull
MKS 767 (Throttle)
Powerbox Evolution
Futaba R7008SB
Mejzlik 27x12TH
Fortitude 32OZ Fuel tank
Lots of Secraft bits

The Build
Well there isn't really much to say about this, It's 3DHS, everything just fell into place, It took about 5 days to complete and I wasn't exactly rushing, The only issue with the build I had was that the supplied wheel axles were incorrect so I had to bodge it with a few washers and a Grub screw and it seems to work well.

Using the Supplied Long Stand offs the spinner sits about 2mm away from the Cowl, I'm not personally that fussed about the spinner distance as no one is going to see it in the air but if you wanted to reduce this gap I would recommend running the shorter Stand offs with a few washers (not sure on size exactly).

If you're going to use Cannisers or Tuned pipes the recommended drop is the same as the 104" Slick so 70mm, with that the cans sit just about level inside the can tunnel.

The Set-up
Once again, Nothing really to talk about here, I was slightly delayed on this step as the servos I had ready for this airframe were scrap so I had to purchase new servos ready to install in the airframe along, This along with having to purchase the Powerbox Evolution for this airframe ment this was the longest process of the whole build (10 days just about).

Once the servos arrived I decided on using 2" arms on the aileron and Elevator servos and 1.5" on the rudder using a Push/Pull set-up. This gave me all the desired throw I needed on both Elevator and Aileron. The only issue I had was that using a Duel Push Pull set-up ment the rudder arms fouled slightly on the bottom of the elevators, This was a reasonably quick fix as I just went at it with a file and then re sealed the covering with an iron and a tiny bit of medium CA.

The Maiden
Again, Nothing really to talk about, the only issue we thought we had was that using the 4.5" from the leading edge (at the wing tip) CoG setting from the Extra 108" it was waaaay to Tail heavy with my RX packs all the way forward, after a bit of tinkering we got it to balance right with 5.5" from the leading edge, I was fine with it like that as I personally prefer a slightly tail heavy aircraft for 3D so onto the maiden!. This was the surprising bit as the usual inverted checks showed that using that CoG setting it was quite nose heavy (This was a relief as I plan to use this airframe for IMAC so this means I don't have to start strapping weight to it to make it fly nose heavy). Anyway after doing the usual first flight checks I started to open it up a bit to see what it could do...This thing is AWESOME!, it will take everything you have to throw at it and take so much more!.

Second flight was even better, moved the weight back a bit more (still a bit to nose heavy as I like it neutral for 3D) and it just continued to impress me, here is where it went a bit wrong, whilst practising manoeuvre no.6 from next years IMAC advanced schedule the canopy decided to part ways with the Fuselage and shatter into a few pieces. No biggy as it's now back in one piece but might be worth keeping an eye out for if any of you get one.

That's as far as I've got so far as I'm waiting for my Powerbox Evolution to return from servicing in Germany but I hope to have it up again next weekend.

I've attached some pics I have collected whilst building the edge for your viewing pleasure. Hope to see some more of these awesome machines pop up on here soon!.

Cheers,

Al

I'm thinking about stripping mine down to the White base then putting my own take on Paul Bonhomme's Red Bull Air Race scheme.
