I remember my first flight (1982?) 36 years ago. I spent a summer building a Kadet and was trembling when Bill Cunningham maidened it. Having the radio handed to me is still a crystal clear memory. My dad and uncle where there for my first flight. What a great day your first flight is.

I also remember my first flight like it was yesterday but in my case it was in 1968 with a senior falcon, second hand , and ugly as hell but after the first flight, it was the most beautiful airplane lol

I spent a couple weeks messing with heli's before airplanes, but my first airplane flight was in early fall of 85 with a Super Box Fly 40. I was lucky enough to solo on the second day. I remember that plain as day, it was raining! My buddy Tony that taught me had been flying for two weeks! The old guys in the club hated that, and even passed a rule against it at the next meeting. How bad a job could he have done, I sold my trainer in one piece a few weeks later.
I used to try and teach others to fly as much as I could, but my buddy Tony was always better at that then me. I'm in a 100+ member club, but I can't remember the last time I saw a trainee pilot. Kinda sad.

It seems the trainee pilots are getting farther and fewer between. I think a lot of it is due to the fact of the department stores selling "get in the air quick" models. It is sad to think that not many guys will get to remember a very pride filled day when they first flew. I truly can not remember my first flight. I can however remember clear as though it were this morning, my first solo. I had a friend trying to teach me. But he never had the time. And after waiting and waiting and waiting and....well, you know.... I decided, "I can do this. I will teach myself." I bought a brand new trainer kit, built it and covered it and took it out to fly. I remember also breaking that thing in at least half or thirds about six different times. Each time I would bring it home and repair it. On the seventh flight, I taxied, took off...flew around until I know I was running on fumes. Was a very long time cuz an O.S. 25 four stroke will fly for hours on an ounce of nitro. LOL. I set up for my landing and I was actually amazed that it was as good of a landing as it was. I didn't even break it that time. LOL.... OH yeah, I will never forget that swollen to the gills feeling of accomplishment of that day. I wish more could experience the thrills that we all have.

I agree and its the same here in Canada, probably all over the world. Kids have XBOX and this makes it very hard to compete with, my grandson also loves the xbox, but at least my daughter (his mom) will only allow very limited time on it per week, so when he came with me for his first time at the field alone with me , it wasn't just an hour like the xbox, it was the whole day, with the guys being very welcoming to him, helping him with his first flight with a trainer, having lunch with us as we do as a group , hopefully he will come back and I will keep exposing this hobby to him but will not push him, not only he was happy but his mom was very happy as she had been with me a lot with my airplanes when growing up.
As for the quick fix from department stores, you are so right , instant gratification but still know nothing about the pride of building , breaking , fixing , flying , and finally landing . like a lot of us did ...
